Every breathing human is creative.
If you can imagine it, you can create it. You don’t need to be a writer or painter or actor. Axe the “I’m not the artsy type so therefore I can’t be creative.” That’s B.S. If you’ve used duct tape, a paper clip or a Band-Aid to fix a leak, repair a loose seam, or unlock a kid in the bathroom, you are VERY creative.
Here’s a newsflash:
No universal law says you must make a vase from raw clay or put random musical notes in a unique order to be creative. If you have a brain (YOU DO) and you can use that brain (YOU CAN), then you my dear friend, are a bonafide creative soul (YES YOU).
Think about all the ideas, projects or goals that have swirled around in your head for days, weeks, months, possibly years. Are there too many that you have trouble getting started?
We know that a scrambled confused mind can’t make a decision. This is when we cast off the very notion that we can be creative. Instead it’s easier (i.e. less hard, more practical) to say I CAN’T and instead go vacuum the car or eat a family-size bag of Twizzlers.
Cancel “I can’t” which is basically an another excuse that REALLY means “I don’t want to.” Gets you off the hook for ever having to try, but then where are you?
Listen darling, you are a thinking, brainstorming, imaginative member of the planet. By this very definition you are “creative”.
I think the hesitation (ahem, excuse) is more sticky than we’d like to admit.
It isn’t so much that we don’t “feel” creative. The deeper underlying feeling is FEAR. We’re afraid. So we internalize the fear of creativity with thoughts like: “I’m not sure I will be good enough or successful.”
Screw that thought.
Nobody can hold a measuring stick to your creativity and imagination — it’s all subjective. And the only person your creation should matter to is YOU.
Adopt The F. A. T. Method to nudge your creative imagination along.
FIND
Find a creative pursuit.
Scribble down every idea that comes to mind. Out of the dozens holding your creativity hostage, you’re looking to FIND the ONE that you come back to over and over. Something that makes you happy just thinking about it. And if you had extra time in the day, you know you’d want to spend that time on this. By process of elimination, cross out as many as you can until you narrow it down. Draw a big circle around that one. You can come back to the others later.
ACTION
Act on one idea at a time.
To stay focused, tackle one creative challenge at a time. And just friggin’ DO IT already. Start with a five minute spurt. If you have an afternoon, immerse yourself. Once you begin, it’s very likely the time will fly. MOJO runs like a well-greased engine. Allow yourself to feel the freedom that comes from doing something you love.
TEST
Test your creative idea.
There are only two possible outcomes: Yea or Nay. Yea, you’ve found your groove and will forgo dinner to continue. You might take a vacation day or delegate household chores to keep going. Or Nay, you acted and it didn’t work out like you’d planned — the grass wasn’t so green after all. No big deal.
On the plus side you have the satisfaction of knowing you gave it a shot. There won’t be the lingering “I’ll try it someday, tomorrow or later” excuses.
Time to move on to the next idea, and another bag of Twizzlers.
BE F*CKING AWESOME TODAY!
