Be Happy. Don’t Worry.

befat.net/shelve-the-worry

Worry will mess up your day.

Today a dear friend emailed me with a worry list that disturbed her sleep. Although she didn’t ASK my advice, I sent her back a suggestion for putting her worries in its place.

I recently wrote about my own struggle and concluded that worry is a wasted emotion, but it’s tough to intellectualize worry when every cell of your being needs to feel in control. Telling yourself or anyone, “Hey, don’t worry about it,” could get you the kind of look your mother once gave after you put a ding in her car.

Being a take charge kind of gal, my friend might benefit from turning the mental strain of worry into a proactive task to temporarily contain it. To get a handle on her worries she needn’t run a marathon or enroll in primal scream therapy, although either is an option. Just saying.

Instead I suggested she try something that worked for me.

Write down all your worries on a piece of paper. A large sheet. Sticky notes. Paper bags. Whatever. Do your very best to let each and every worry leave your brain, exit out your body and record it. Then take the list and shelve it out of sight. Leave it there for a week.

After a week take out the list. Here’s a few things you’ll notice:

Some issues resolved themselves.

Some issues you thought were issues are now non-issues.

Some issues are problems or situations no amount of worry will resolve.

Some issues, after a short incubation period, give you a clearer perspective on what to do next, if anything.

It’s hard to discount worry. We’re human after all. But it’s imperative to get a handle on worry unless we enjoy a state of being physically and mentally stressed out.

Write down your worries. Put them away. Revisit later.

I heard this song from Bobby McFerrin on the radio this morning. Choosing happiness over worry is a choice, my friend. Don’t Worry. Be Happy. And…

Laughing Clowns

befat.net

The laughter of small children is contagious. Peek-a-boo games or weird noises by animals or adults (ripping paper or blowing your nose) send kids into hysterics.

You can hardly watch a child in full out giggle mode without being drawn in. The next thing you know you’re laughing too. I dare you not to be childlike.

The distinction between children and adults who laugh out loud is a matter of self-control and decorum. Due to their lack of world experience, children have neither. They will laugh wherever and whenever anything tickles them. In adults, when alcohol or pratfalls are involved this distinction becomes moot.

A few years ago, several very mature women, and myself, got the giggles at a wake. Most inappropriate, I agree.

We had visited the family, given our condolences and left the building, like proper adults. So far, so good.

It’d been a while since we’d seen each other. Outside on the newly installed front porch we caught up on each others’ lives. As one of the women said her good-byes and stepped away, a loose floorboard sprung up towards her face, just like in the cartoons. Although she managed to avoid a plank to the face, one of the women snorted. I tried to squash my laugh, which came off like a cross between a fart and a burp. That sent another woman into tearful hysteria, and in no time, the train roared out of the station.

What could only be described as rude behavior by a pack of ignorant hyenas, actually was a huge release of pent up sadness. To regain our composure we averted each others’ eyes until one side look and an off-handed quip started the engine all over again.

If you’re around the right kinds of people, prolonged and uncontrollable laughter is childishly fun.

Dressed in black at a wake, well, we drew some interesting looks. A lovely gentleman put his arm around my friend in an effort to comfort her tears. This sent two of us into a wail. One of us whizzed, and the train circled once again.

Remember the Chuckles the Clown Funeral episode on the Mary Tyler Moore Show?

Yeah, this about sums it up. We were Mary Tyler Moores, laughing like children.

Three Dog Good Night

Sad to hear of the passing of Cory Wells (74) lead singer of THREE DOG NIGHT.

My very first concert (other than being in one in elementary school!) was TDN at the (old) Boston Garden. My only recollection is that is was LOUD and FUN, and my date (Steve B.) was such a nice guy.

The movie, THE BIG CHILL, featured iconic songs from my high school days, and truth-be-told I watch/fall asleep to it often because the soundtrack is just freaking great.

Sharing my favorite THREE DOG NIGHT song, Joy to the World! Please explain to the young folks that this is NOT a Christmas song.

Cheers Bullfrogs!
