Thinking Ruins Everything

Thinking Ruins Everything/Inspirational quote/Funny life quote/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio

This morning, bright and early at 4:30 a.m. I had a vision for the day. Sparing you the details, let’s say that by 9 a.m. things started to go off schedule. By 1 p.m. it was clear I’d never catch up. By 4, I looked at the sole bottle of wine staring at me. At 7:30, the wine is gone and I am exactly where I pictured I’d be…at 8 a.m. In my head every cog in the day’s wheel clicked along perfectly. In reality the wheels fell off the wagon before my feet touched the floor.

Tomorrow?

I’m not going to think about it until noon.

The Priceless Cost of the Journey

Wouldn't take nothing for my journey now/Maya Angelou quote/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio

When you’re in the thick of crap it’s hard to imagine it will ever get better. Intellectually we know we’ll get through it, but we’re realists, too, right? We know that it’s entirely possible that life may never be the same.

RIGHT NOW, if we could buy our way out of it we would, without hesitation. We’d decide rather quickly that the stuff we’ve collected and coveted and lugged from place to place — the souvenirs, jewelry, cars and boats, the “summer cottage” — is meaningless in the face of the storm we’re in. We’d hawk everything (down to our socks!) in exchange for the magical salve that heals all wounds.

It’s not possible, of course.

‘Cause sometimes the pitfalls have no logical counterpart. The fine print says you gotta walk through it, baby. And how you survive is your choice. Do you fight or surrender? Both could be good choices. Depends.

Too Many Choices

Too many choices graphic/The chances of getting anything done today/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net

I think making a choice to get things done today is like trying to decide what to order off The Cheesecake Factory menu.

You go there with a hankering for one thing but by the time you finish flipping through their War and Peace sized menu of appetizers, entrees and desserts, you’re not so sure anymore. Then you realize there’s a separate and equally enormous drink menu. Now you’re in big trouble.

Too many choices make us confused. And being confused stresses us out. And being stressed out means we choose the default.

We order the chicken.

Because it’s predictable and satisfies our hunger. And we think, next time, we’ll be more daring and order the Cajun Jambalaya Pasta.

Interest vs Committment

Interest vs Commitment quote/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net

Are you interested or committed? There’s a difference between the two.

Being interested has a casual and comfortable vibe. We get interested in joining trivia night or taking a fitness class but haven’t actually done anything to go forward.

But being committed takes work. To sign up, check the box, take the oath or publicly declare your intention means you’re ready and willing to do the ugly, hard, sweaty work.

When you’re interested, you’re sort of on a first date. Figuring out if this idea, project, endeavor, person…whatever…is worth a second look or time to place a rescue call. Having an interest means you’re wishy-washy, unsure, testing the possibilities. You may go forward or you may not. At this point you don’t care.

When you’re committed you’ve decided upfront that you won’t be scared away once the newness wears off. Nope. You’ll pass on going out with friends, curling up on the couch or make excuses. Even if you’re tempted to quit when the going gets hard — and it ALWAYS gets hard — you’ll leap, crawl and scratch your way to the end to make it happen.

It’s safe to stay interested. You don’t need to do anything but talk. To be committed is to take ownership and make shit happen.

The next new thing you want to take on should pass this litmus test: Am I interested or committed?

P.S. Just about midway through #NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and still on schedule. Truthfully, today felt like I was rolling a gigantic mud ball uphill with my chin. Onward and upward. I am committed. Or should be.

How Much Weight Is Too Much?

Letting things go/inspirational quote/motivational quote/positive blog/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net

At some point you’ve got to drop some things simply because they become too heavy to carry.

The day you decide to let go and drop some of the crap you’ve lugged around for days, months…years…that’s the day your back begins to feel less pain. Your shoulders lean back. Your head rises to greet the sunshine.

It’s a new day. With a much lighter load to carry, you can probably fly.

Did You Get Sparked Today?

From a tiny spark may burst forth a mighty flame/Stephanie DelTorchio/motivation/inspiration/befat.net/11.10.2016

Lots of questions for you…

A SPARK is the small trace of an intense feeling — an inkling, a thought, an idea.

When you add up the many “sparks” which run through your mind each day, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Which one do you act on first? Which do you let go?

Is it possible that while you were living day to day, it passed you by like “magic in the moonlight”*? You remember exactly the place when the spark hit you. It was memorable and is still ingrained in your personal safety deposit box. But because you put it away, the spark has fizzled or collected dust.

Do you ever wonder if your biggest spark (the ONE) has already happened?

Fear not. Sparks are energy. Forever streaming through you and around you.

Today, challenge yourself to revisit your sparks. Dig them out. Dust them off.

Perhaps it was an abandoned idea or project or thought that got you all excited. But you excused it away as fruitless. Bad timing. Meant for someone else, not you. (Oh, please, don’t revert to those feelings of unworthiness — you are SO WORTHY of your sparks).

And what about your smoldering spark? The one you keep close to the chest. Patiently waiting for perfect conditions before it gets your attention. For you to give it a low and slow breath to ignite it, and with constant attention grow your spark into a roaring fire. That ONE.

So…Did you get sparked today?

From This Day Forward

Let's all get along today/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net/11.9.2016

Today, let’s do our best to LISTEN to each other and HOLD our opinion until we HEAR what the other person has to say and then AGREE to DISAGREE. Like good humans.

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Onward. Together. Comrades.

Get A Move On

Martha Graham quote on movement/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net/inspiration/motivation

In seven decades as a dancer and choreographer, Martha Graham, a pioneer of modern dance,  created 181 ballets.

“I believe that we learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living, the principles are the same. In each, it is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one’s being, a satisfaction of spirit.” — Martha Graham

Practice dancing. Or practice living. It’s the same thing.

The Argument You Make

The Argument You Make/inspirational quote/motivational quote/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net

Taking a stand, pleading for your case, making a point…lucky are we to have the freedom to stand up for our convictions.

Remember when we do this — narrow our focus, close our minds, draw lines (build walls?) — we are bound by the limitations of our thinking.

Today, give yourself the gift of open-mindedness.

A Map Is A Good Idea

Yogi Berra quote/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio/inspirational quote/motivational quote

A road map is a good idea when you don’t know the journey by heart.

Having a co-pilot is a choice when you want to share the journey. A reliable source who shares your vision and looks out for dangerous curves and potholes can save you time and money.

Being a “panster” means you take the road as it comes and make it up as you go along. No map. No true destination. No end zone.

It’s exciting to live this way — open, rogue, fearless — so long as you’re okay where you land. Someday.
