Live Large On The Grand Stage

empowerment/motivation/inspiration/You weren't put here to live a little bitty life/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio

There are no small parts just small actors…might be a fine approach should you wish to become an actor. But this is your life and there is ZERO reason to accept bit parts on the grand stage that is your one and only life.

You weren’t put on the planet to live a little bitty life.

Within your own four walls and around the people you know and love, you get the chance every day to take a starring role. To encourage others. To share. To influence. To teach. To inspire.

Play the part for all it’s worth. Come back with a fabulous encore. Then you get to take a well deserved bow.

If It Ain’t Broke

You're Not Broken/empowerment/inspirational/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio/quotes

I need to remodel the master bathroom.

Why? The ugly dark green floor tile for starters. I find it hard to believe that the original builder sorted through hundreds of options and decided: “Yes! I love it!”

He loved the construction-grade piece of crap vanity, too. And the goofy light fixture which makes the term “bathe by candlelight” all too real at six o’clock in the morning.

The entire room feels too small, too dark, too dated — everything any HGTV prospective homeowner would call “a complete gut job.” Seriously, I’m that crazy lady in Lowe’s constantly on the look-out for Matt Meunster and the Bath Crashers team to makeover my bathroom.

For thirteen years  I’ve wanted to take down a wall and open up the space so that the sitting area isn’t so cheek-to-cheek. The room cries for natural light because the genius builder put the loo in the middle of the house. Our solution is a skylight. So we bought one. It’s in the box wedged behind other stuff in the garage, waiting patiently.

My husband and I agree the room could use a spruce up but we’re in opposite corners when it comes to a major overhaul. He says no, naturally I disagree.

Do men not realize that women fantasize about chic bathtastic renos? I have ideas people. Lots. Magazine cut-outs, a Pinterest board, samples, swatches. Forget visions of sugarplums dancing in my head. Friends, my dreams are of glass tiles, dual sink vanity, rain shower, water closet, the damn skylight installed. I’m ready to sledgehammer the space to the studs and turn it into a luxurious spa retreat.

And then…

I look at my sweet little EN SUITE with a less critical eye.

Nothing major is broken.

The toilet functions. Hot and cold water flow nicely. There’s a tub and a separate shower. The closet is ginormous. A new light fixture recently replaced brightens up the space. So what’s the complaint?

A major renovation wouldn’t make the bathroom function any better. It would be used the same amount of time. For the same people. Serve the same purpose.

After much thought, I think with a few tweaks it will be just fine.

Paint is a cheap and easy fix. Swap out the vanity. Add a towel bar. A new shower curtain.

If it ain’t broke, right? A few minor changes and VOILÁ.

Now about that skylight…

Slowing Down In A Fast-Paced World

Slowing down in a fast-paced world/Simon & Garfunkel/59th street bridge song/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio/9.15.2016

It’s an irony of our modern lives that while technology is continually invented to save us time, we use that time to do more and more things, and so our lives are more fast-paced and hectic than ever.

Life moves at such a crazy fast pace today that it seems to pass us by before we can really enjoy it. Weekends go by even faster. No?

You know it doesn’t have to be this way.

Wouldn’t it be great if we started a Reduce Our Hectic Lifestyle Revolution and slow down to enjoy life more? Sign me up. I’ll take a Ladies Medium t-shirt please.

A slower-paced life means we get to enjoy our mornings, instead of rushing off to work or school or wherever in a frenzy. It means taking time to enjoy what we’re doing — to appreciate the sunrise, the smell of coffee, to actually focus on whoever we’re talking to or spending time with — instead of checking our laptop or iPhone before wiping the sleepies from our eyes.

It means shifting to single-tasking rather than multi-tasking — I’m calling this attention deficit focusing. Or why you just might leave home with two different shoes on your feet.

Here’s a few starter suggestions for how to slow life down:

Your Passion Isn’t A Secret

Finding your passion/passion/inspiring quote/encouragement/quotes/positive quotes/befat.net/Stephanie DelTorchio

This is my personal opinion, but I think people who are seeking to find their passion are wasting time.

Truth is, if you knew what excited you, you’d be doing it already. You’d probably have been doing it for most of your life.

So to be thirty, forty, fifty, sixty years old now and claim that “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” is bullshit. Sorry.

You know exactly what interests you.

As a little kid I wanted to write stories. And I did. I kept that up all through school, to some praise from teachers, too. My parents “discovered” some of my journals tucked between the box spring and mattress. That didn’t go well at all.

It was the 70s. Teenage girl. Sex. Drugs. Rock ‘n Roll. Need I say more?

Follow Your Curiosity

Follow Your Curiosity/befat.net/inspirational/passion/quotes/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net Following your passion is easy, unless you don’t have one.

So what if you’re still a wanderer seeking that elusive feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something?

Eat, Pray, Love best-selling author Elizabeth Gilbert,  suggests that instead of chasing your passion, try exploring it instead. Follow your curiosity. Do this without expectation that anything will come out of it other than joy. You never know, says Gilbert,  “but if you let go of your passion and follow your curiosity, your curiosity just might lead you to your passion.”

Be A Good Fake

Inspirational quote/Empowering quote/funny quote on finding your passion/Stephanie DelTorchio/befat.net We stand in awe of our heroes — athletes and actors and writers and astronauts, etc. — their accomplishments and awards.  Deservedly so. They spent years and years becoming the success we admire.

If we share the same goal or passion as our hero, we want to be like them. Unless for some reason I have yet to figure out, you want to be a Kardashian. In that case, leave. Immediately.

That’s not you. You have something of value to offer the world. Whether it’s to start a business, change up your career or deeper explore a hobby or passion…it’s all good.

Besides chatting it up on this blog every day with you guys, which I love, writing is my thing. The art and craft of screenwriting is my current obsession. Does the name Aaron Sorkin ring any bells? If you’re a TV or movie watcher perhaps you’ve heard of THE WEST WING, A FEW GOOD MEN, THE SOCIAL NETWORK (he won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for that one).

What I’d give to write banter dialogue like him. Or, no lie, have his Oscar. Well, not his, my own.

But our heroes started out like us. With no knowledge. Okay, maybe a few lucky breaks. Knew somebody who knew somebody. Had a rich uncle.

As sure as the Earth orbits the Sun (why is this still debated?) our heroes spent many Moons to get where they ended up. And I spent three minutes crafting a totally crappy astronomy connection. Fail.

Getting better is a process.

Use your hero as inspiration. Learn from them. Emulate the good traits that took them to the top. Avoid the bad ones. (Sorkin did a stint in rehab).

Say you’ve always wanted to be a portrait photographer. That’s great. Instead of thinking that you need to know everything there is about it  — camera equipment, lighting, art direction, make-up, etc. —  start taking pictures of people you know. Enroll in a class. Offer to be an assistant for someone who is doing exactly what you want to do; find a mentor. Study the works of Annie Leibovitz.

Don’t get me wrong, it takes a long time to become excellent at a profession or craft. For some, it’s a life long process. For others, like me, the journey holds as much (or more) satisfaction and joy than the result. Notwithstanding the Oscar.

Should You Choose To Accept

Mission Possible/empowering quote/positive quote/funny blog post/sdeltorchio@befat.net/befat.net

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to express your passion, creativity, gifts and talents in any way that fulfills your life and makes the world a better place to live.

Unfortunately, sometimes the mission is challenged. Compromised by the likes of self-serving evil bad guys and cluttered with obstacles, detours and fast moving trains. Your need to express yourself is hopefully less dramatic and more “possible” than these (very strained and corny) movie analogies.

Your job (which the rest of us BEG you to accept) is to stop the bad guys, avoid or conquer things in your way and save your piece of the world. Do this well and you may find yourself offered another mission. Should you choose to accept, of course.

This message will self-destruct in 1,440 minutes, the amount of time in this day.

3 Steps To Take When the Sh*t Hits the Fan

Positive quotes/inspiring quotes/encouraging quotes/Stephanie DelTorchio, blogger/befat.net/positive blogs

Life is moving along nicely.

Your proverbial ducks are in a row — checkbook is balanced, everybody’s healthy, the home team looks promising going into the stretch…

Then WHAM!

The whole point of me starting this blog was the acknowledgement that life is a crap shoot. At any time, without notice or warning, the world as we know it can change in a instant. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been a good scout. Paid your taxes. Washed your hands to a slowly hummed rendition of “Happy Birthday.” It’s gonna find ya.
