Dinner For One

befat.net

Having dinner alone conjures up thoughts of someone who is lonely or a traveler in a strange place with no friends. But honestly, sometimes the person having dinner alone, just wants to be alone. From her family. And the dog.

——————————-

I’d had enough that day — stressful work, household drudgery, children pushing each others’ buttons, dandelions suffocating the lawn — all I wanted was a nice quiet meal with my family.

After work I picked up three kids from three different activities which could not be further apart and still be in the same city. Like mothers everywhere, after My Day Part One, I barely kicked off my shoes before throwing in a load of laundry, starting dinner and wrestling with homework. My Day Part Two.

It started like most stupid arguments do. The dog needed to be fed. And I’d hoped one of “them” wouldn’t find it too difficult to toss a cup of dried food into a bowl while I did “everything else”.

When the hubs arrived, he sat with the newspaper, instigated the kids, (“We’re just playing.”) and didn’t feed the dog. His world had no Part Two.

Nobody got to the table while the food was still hot, no matter how many times I threatened they’d eat it cold. Instead there was an undercurrent of bickering among the children. The only creature living in the house who minded her manners, and didn’t complain at the five o’clock hour, was the dog. She sat patiently waiting, looking to me to be fed.

Finally the family sat at the table, napkins under chins. “Did anybody feed the dog?” I asked while scooping mashed potatoes onto dinner plates. No big surprise; no response.

I left the table, taking up my plate, covered it in aluminum foil, put a cup of dried food in the dog’s dish and walked out the door. Okay, a bit dramatic. But it was a Thursday and I had one more day to go. I drove to one of my favorite spots by the waterfront, where, on a park bench with a stunning sunset view, I sat in peace and quiet and ate my chicken, mashed potatoes and salad.

A sweet young couple pushing a high-end baby carriage walked by. Ah, their first child. I could tell. All smiles and wide-eyed, smitten with the newness of parenthood. The BEST baby on the entire planet, they told me. Two months old. Cute. Adorable. THE. ENTIRE. PLANET.

Clueless.

Enjoy him, I said, and I meant it sincerely. I’d once been a new parent, sucked into the false advertisement of chubby cheeks, soft skin and melodic cooing at 9 a.m.

If not me, then somebody else would keep the park bench warm until the parents of the BEST child on the entire planet becomes a teenager. I sent them a silent blessing and finished my meal.

The sky changed from golden yellow to orange, and then beautiful streaks of pinks and purples danced on the still harbor.

Back at home things had settled down. The dishes were cleaned. Baths done. PJs on. Homework in progress. They were all happy to see me, especially the hubs, who squeezed me and said, “I fed the dog.”

Don’t Wait For Spring

befat.net

The day I gave up waiting for the right moment took a very long time in the making. For years the excuses and roadblocks piled up. All legitimate reasons to put the dream job, dream career, bliss following…whatever, on the back burner. None were sacrificial, like donating a kidney or saving a forest, just life taking priority — spouse, children, obligations. I mindlessly became a cog in the wheel, spinning to someone else’s agenda, all the while thinking “some day”.

It was January, three years ago when “someday” arrived. I walked into the family room and held up a letter that had arrived in the mail. My husband looked at me over his glasses, and waited. With more than 30 years of my dramatic displays, he didn’t flinch.

Then I waved the business size envelope with what I think would be the same excitement as if the Massachusetts State Lottery had sent us a big fat check.

“I hold in my hand,” I said, smugly, “the last college tuition bill we are willingly going to pay.”

Our last kid was ready to graduate in the spring. And now, after all our due diligence as responsible parents, we were officially taking #3 off the payroll. This was to be my time. We’d had meetings about this pending day. It had been part of the big plan. I would leave my job and write something. Anything. It didn’t matter what I produced so long as I used the time to produce. There was never a question in my mind that I would write with the same passion and energy I’d given my family and other obligations.

I wasn’t looking to end a career, rather to start living my dream.

***********************************************************************
Charlie Chaplin on his 70th birthday…

As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is AUTHENTICITY.

As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody as I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it RESPECT.

As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it MATURITY.

As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment, so I could be calm. Today I call it SELF-CONFIDENCE.

As I began to love myself I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm. Today I call it SIMPLICITY.

As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today I know it is LOVE OF ONESELF.

As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is MODESTY.

As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worry about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where EVERYTHING is happening. Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it FULFILLMENT.

As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection WISDOM OF THE HEART.

We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today I know THAT IS LIFE!

Is It Good For You?

befat.net It's not selfish 2.24.2016

Take care of YOU. The tender administration of self is a necessary gift. Not only for you but for the people around you, too. Remember the saying: “When Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”? Yeah, that. (And Daddy, too!)

My father once told me that it takes courage and a certain amount of selfishness to be the person you know you were meant to be. Sage wisdom.

Make yourself a priority, the same way you put your child, partner, family pets, financial obligations, civic duties, etc. You easily bend. You are the go-to. You are dependable and reliable for every person in your world. But do you write in ink, private time to discover, dream, create, run, read, etc.?

Putting yourself first (for a change) invites accusatory finger waggling. How dare you leave me/us and do this thing you say you need to do? Our internal voice tends to agree — the gourmet meal isn’t on the table, you’ve declined to serve on a committee, you said ‘no’ to an invitation, you leave work ON TIME! How selfish can you be? Haha.

Doing what is best for you is not self-absorbed, narcissistic behavior but sound internal and creative self-care. Do this, and everybody, including Mama, will be happy.

Does It Bring You Joy?

befat.net

Stand in front of your clothes closet. Take a piece of clothing in your hand and decide if the shirt or pants or jacket or dress still brings you the joy it did when you first fell in love with it. If it does, keep it. If it doesn’t, toss it or donate it. (Full disclosure: I’m a bit late to the party but I’ve just read “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing”). I like the notion author Marie Kondo puts forth, truly abbreviated here, that if an object does not bring you joy, it should be sent to the dump or donation pile. That’s one way to clean house and simplify.

After reading the book, I wondered if her proposition could be taken a step further to include people and places.

Of course breaking up with clothes and “stuff” is easier than ending a relationship. My circle of close friends is small but every one in it brings me great joy. This is true for the ones I see often and those I cross paths with sporadically, too. But when a person becomes a drag on your time and energy, it might be time to have the “it’s not you, it’s me” talk. This isn’t just for friends, but also lovers, your boss, your hairdresser, auto mechanic — you get it.

Sometimes moving from a place that no longer offers the same joy it once did is the right move. This includes the place where you work, the school you attend, the restaurant that once served the BEST lobster roll, but now, meh. Even the route you travel every day is subject to change.

No matter whether it’s a personal relationship, a place or a thing, if your hanging onto it no longer enhances your life or brings you joy, it deserves to be deleted from your life. Tough standard you say? Yes, I agree. But what sounds callus or brutal can be truly life-changing and freeing. After you rip off the Band-Aid you’ll find the time and space to invite in things, people and places that DO bring you joy.

Start Over

befat.net

When yesterday sucked, but the good Lord saw to it that you should open your eyes today, rejoice! You get today to start over.

There wasn’t a thing I could do to change my husband’s cancer diagnosis. It-is-what-it-is, as they say. That day was, and still is, the absolute worst, most sucky day of my life. It felt as if life became a silent movie; there was action and words but we just sort of numbly watched the scenes play out, without popcorn or comfortable seating.

The next day reality hit. Bleary-eyed but resolute, we took a collective deep breath and agreed that this day was a good day to start over. Since there was no getting around this “thing” we really had no choice but to go through it. Together. (If there were other choices I sure didn’t know about them.)

Today is a good day to START OVER. #BeFAT

Click To Tweet

The “rules” had changed, of course. Everything felt upside down and twisted inside out, Bizarro World. Life would never be the same, at least not in the foreseeable future. That was yesterday we said. Not so great. But today?

Can I tell you how freakin’ grateful we were to wake up with a shared, determined purpose? (Trust me, we don’t always agree on stuff!)

We tapped our coffee cups and began a toast that has continued for the past seventeen years: “To us, and no more tumors.” Today we ask for blessings for others who need some love and hope, forever grateful for each and every day we get to start again, and pray they do too.

“Life isn’t fair,” we say.

“Shit happens.”

“You need to go through the rain to enjoy the rainbows.”

Etc.

We know all the lines. Heck, we’ve got posters and screen savers and bumper stickers to support the cause. But sometimes a simple ritual, like having coffee in the morning, is a good enough place to start over.

Things You Can, Should and Must Do

befat.net

There is a difference between things you CAN do, things you SHOULD do and things you MUST do.

You CAN for instance, chose where you live. What you do for work. People you associate with, date, marry. How well, or not, you treat yourself.

You SHOULD chose to live in a place that brings you comfort and joy. Whether a pitched tent in the woods, a boat, a house in the country, an apartment in the city or a bunk in a commune, the physical environment doesn’t matter so long as it suits your needs. Find a corner of the Universe that is yours to decorate and dwell, and invite over people you love, cook delicious food, tend a garden — rooftop or acres or a single potted tomato plant. (Wait, this is my place.)

You SHOULD chose to do work that feeds your soul and makes you happy. Do work that feels like play, if at all possible. Do work that at the end of the day makes you satisfied and exhausted in such a good way that you will want to repeat it tomorrow and the next day and the next. You’ll spend many hours doing work over your lifetime and if you go there every day grudgingly, hating it, dying inside until Friday, what’s the point? No amount of money is worth your unhappiness and dissatisfaction.

It’s okay to take a job or jobs, in order to support a lifestyle that leaves time to do the work you love. Consider this a means to the end to pursue a hobby or go back to school or focus on Act 2.

You SHOULD associate with people who elevate and complement you (not necessarily COMPLIMENT you and your ego). Understand that not everybody will love you, or like you, or tolerate your very existence. And that’s fine. Different strokes, right? Maybe get a dog, or a cat, or a horse or a gaggle of geese if human interaction is your struggle.

Avoid the negative cads and zealots. They are generally humorless and will over time suck the life blood out of you. Accept, too, that people ebb and flow in your life, like the tide. Invite them in, be willing to let them go. Be as good a friend and support to the people you associate with as they are to you.

Here’s what you MUST DO: You MUST take care of your body, your mind and your inner spirit. If you won’t do this, who will? You’ll need the discipline and strength of all three to carry you through during the times you lose your way, overindulge, trip and falter over the things you CAN and SHOULD do.

Be Your Own Valentine

YOURE AMAZING! 2.14.2016

Should you be lucky enough to have someone in your life who buys in to the commercialism of Valentine’s Day,  the rest of us will not accept complaints when that pound of chocolate dipped salted caramels happily finds a home on your hips (oh my who thought of these delicious bad boys??). And no blaming the giver either, for the last minute supermarket flower bouquets. There is a reason the front of the store looks like a queen’s funeral.

I feel bad for the guy/gal who is pressured into giving hearts, flowers, jewels or more, in fear of coming off as unromantic. And I get more upset toward the person on the other end who does the pushing. V-Day shouldn’t be a day of stress or forced expressions of affection.

Lest you label me a lonely single lady or a romantic curmudgeon, this is not the case. I have a longtime mate. We eloped and married on Valentine’s Day, so there. Save your oohs and ahhs. That’s a story for another day. It was more Rich Dad, Poor Dad than an over-the-top wedding event that took years of planning. I also have nothing against weddings; I love weddings. In a nutshell we wanted to buy a house and the bank wanted us to be married before “giving” us a loan. We went off and got married, and then the bank turned us down.

Suffice to say we’ve sifted through the early, gooey years (and eventually got a home) and forged a unified and a more practical view point of unrequited love. It’s our style, and it works just fine. He sent flowers once and charged them to our credit card that I paid. Commercialized Valentine’s Day sort of went out of it for me there.

I get romance every day. He brings us coffee in bed each morning, unless I’m off on a writing retreat (like now) and then we have coffee over the phone. He’s the King of the Manicured Lawn and I get to enjoy neatly mowed grass and sharply edged flower beds. He’ll crawl under a creepy deck to retrieve whatever I’ve lost, climb up a rickety ladder to swat a hornet’s nest, fill up the gas grill tank and shovel a very long driveway packed with snow so we can all get out. That’s just the beginning of what my Valentine does for me on a regular basis. Sweet, consistent, reliable, dependable, stable, sometimes semi-crazy love. This is one lucky gal. I know it. I appreciate it.

On my end, I take care of the domestic side of the house, meaning to this day, my husband believes there exists in this universe an Underwear Fairy and she washes and stores his boxer briefs like sushi rolls. Let him have his fantasy.

But for the women and men out there who love the LOVE “holiday” yet feel sad about being alone, buy yourself a box of the very best chocolates and a nice big bunch of flowers. Find or make yourself a card and write a beautiful message of self-love and appreciation. From you, to you. You deserve it.
