Be The Butterfly
This is my paraphrase of an old story. The origin is unknown to me. If you know, please let me know so that I may give proper credit to the author.
A boy climbing up to his treehouse spotted a cocoon attached to a thin branch, shaking ever so gently. A closer examination revealed a tiny tear in the cocoon where the butterfly feverishly worked to free itself.
The slow progress tested the boy’s patience. He had things to do, trees to climb.

The cocoon shook with the butterfly’s effort and determination to get out. Although moment by long moment the opening got bigger, the boy began to worry that the butterfly would become too exhausted to free itself.

He couldn’t watch the poor thing struggle any longer.
Taking his trusty army knife, he cut the cocoon away to free the butterfly. It worked! The butterfly was immediately relieved of doing the hard chore for himself.
But very soon it was obvious that the butterfly was in trouble.
Its weak body trembled.
Instead of spreading its wings they barely moved.
For the remainder of the day the boy watched the butterfly drag its body along the tree branch, until it stopped trying altogether.
The boy didn’t understand that the butterfly needed to complete the process on its own. To break through the cocoon and allow the life-giving fluids and nutrients to move its wings. Only then would it become the beautiful butterfly it was meant to be.
